John Sanders Memorial Picnic

  • Brown County State Park Strahl Lake Shelter (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

The annual BPC picnic was renamed the John Sanders Memorial Picnic in honor of John Sanders, who died in 2010.  John was a long-time, talented, and energetic member who contributed to the life of the club in many ways. The picnic had once been a yearly event, but for some reason it had disappeared from the club calendar, until, John undertook its resurrection and rejuvenation, and managed it for several years.

Gallery406 Exhibit Jurying

This is a show of about 20 images. The 2015 jurying will be on Sunday, November 22,
beginning at 2:00 p.m., in the gallery, which is on the north side of Bloomington’s
courthouse square. Please try to arrive 5-10 minutes before that, so that we can be
settled for the jurying at 2. (On-street parking is free on Sunday.) Members may
submit up to three images. Jurying is open, so artists are encouraged to stay and
watch the process. Gallery owner Kendall Reeves is looking for new work that has not
been previously exhibited in Bloomington. Images must be submitted ready to hang.
(Framed is probably best in most cases, but Kendall is open on the subject of
presentation styles.) There is no submissions fee. Gallery406 takes a 40% commission
on sales.

NOTE: This exhibit is an official club exhibit, so works displayed will not be
eligible for submission to the club’s other juried exhibits. However, a work already
shown at gallery406 may be shown in the Atrium or Lennie’s show. Also, as with all
club exhibits, exhibitors must be paid-up club members.

Paul Lightfoot: A Celebration of Life

Paul Lightfoot served more than a quarter-century as a dedicated and passionate member of the Bloomington Photography Club. Among his many roles, Paul was our official photography club ‘Guru,’ as he was affectionately known.  Paul was a gifted photographer and well loved. His kind and genuine nature, humor, wisdom, and smile will be deeply missed. A Celebration of Life gathering to honor the memory of Paul Lightfoot will take place on Tuesday, October 13, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Kip May Photography Studio, 114 East Smith Ave.  This message is being announced only through the BPC network, but all are welcome. There will be a photo slide show and a guided conversation to share stories and memories of Paul.  If you have photos of Paul you wish to share, please bring them either as prints or on a thumb drive to be included in the slide show.

Overnight Field Trip: Northern Indiana

July 18 - 19. We will be heading north to Miami, Cass, and Wabash counties in Indiana. A block of rooms is reserved in the newly renovated Super 8 motel in the town of Logansport. The price for a single room is $45 +tax, and for a double room $50 +tax. Please phone 1-574-722-1273 to reserve your room and let them know that you're with the Bloomington Photography Club. The Bloomington Photography Club has a block of rooms in the newly renovated Super 8 motel in the town of Logansport. Single room = $45 +tax and a double room = $50 +tax. Please phone 1-574-722-1273 to reserve your room and let them know that you're with the Bloomington Photography Club.
The motel offers free wifi and a free generic breakfast. Or if you'd rather there are various restaurants within walking distance of the motel.

There are a number of other nearby hotels if you'd prefer to stay somewhere else.

Our Saturday will mainly have events in Peru. Peru will be host to their circus parade with authentic circus wagons, clowns, calliopes, floats and bands. The parade is the longest running circus parade in the United States, and second largest parade in Indiana. There will also be a big top performance experience the beautifully costumed young performers who are so skilled that circus fans find it hard to believe they are amateurs; enjoy the rides, food, games and more on the main streets of Peru.

Please email me: rrezvan@bluemarble.net if you know you'll be attending the performance on Saturday. We're hoping to qualify for a group discount for tickets and we've been offered "press passes" to behind the scenes access and I need to have a head count for the needed passes.

As Saturday will be rather busy, we won't have a scheduled lunch. We will have a dinner gathering in Logansport at Mr. Happy Burger. Please view a very short video about the restaurant here: http://www.wthr.com/story/28397726/mr-happy-burger-serves-up-smiles-in-logansport

Mini Field Trip Portrait Focus Group/Point and Shoot Focus Group

I am organizing a mini field trip for my two focus groups, the Portrait Focus Group and the Point and Shoot Focus Group.  The event is the 16th Annual Road Rocket Rumble. We have had club members go in past years and it is a photographer’s playground.  The Road Rocket Rumble is a 3 day event featuring vintage restored cars and hot rods from the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s, live Rock-a-Billy bands, many people dressed in fun vintage clothing, vendors and large crowds of interesting people who have gathered for this festive event.

This is not an ‘official BPC field trip’ but all are welcome and I will make this known to some of the other focus groups as well should they have an interest.

Here are the details:
www.indyroadrockets.com

For those interested in carpooling we will gather in the Northside Marsh Parking lot at 9:30 am on Saturday, June 27th.  If you are planning on going that day please let me know if you will need a ride and/or if you are willing to drive.  Passengers should be prepared to offer their driver some compensation for gasoline.  We will leave to return at 5:00 pm. If you wish to arrive and leave on a different schedule that is fine and we’ll see you up there.

Spectator Fee: $10.00 at the gate.

Where:
The Clarion Waterfront Hotel
2930 Waterfront Parkway W. Dr,
Indianapolis, IN 46214

Lunch:  We will try to find an appropriate location for those wishing to eat lunch (on the grounds) and we’ll communicate that location when it is determined.

Please let me know if you are planning to attend and if you are willing to drive so I can plan accordingly.

Macor Group Outting

Our next outing is scheduled for June 6.  We will be first meeting at 9:30 on Range Road for wildflower photos, eat at Fazoli's about 11:30, then on to the IU Greenhouse in Jordan Hall on 3rd St about 12:30.  Parking for the greenhouse is in the garage located between Atwater and 3rd just south of Jordan Hall. You get to it from Atwater.

Here are some guidelines regarding parking and where to go. First, to get there you go east on 10th St from the Bypass and turn left at the first stoplight, onto Range Road. (The Frank McCloskey Post Office Building is visible on the right at that intersection.)

Go down Range Road past the entrances to IU buildings on the left and apartment buildings on the right. The road then divides and you want to take the right fork, towards the IU Service Building. If you go up to the Service Building there's plenty of parking right in front of it, and it should not be a problem to park there.

After parking, you'll want to walk back down the Service Building drive and turn right past the gate (it may or may not be closed) and down the gravel road. Shortly there will be a branch of that road going to the right, but don't take that; it just leads to the back of the Service Building.

The road borders the Cross Country course on your left. Soon you'll arrive at another gate, which is always closed. At this point you can turn left up the hill (i.e., not going past the gate in front of you), which will soon take you to a big field on the right (there's a closed gate there also), which should have a lot of wildflowers. Or, you can go on around the gate and along the gravel road which eventually goes down into Sycamore Valley. There should be wildflowers along the upper part of this road.

The road down to Sycamore Valley eventually becomes quite steep, so this is something to think about for people who are not really into steep roads. In the valley there should be more wildflowers. You can go a ways to the right or the left when you get to the bottom of the road. If you go to the right, you'll come to a place where you can easily access the fairly large stream that flows along the side of the valley.

There are no houses there. Deer, but usually not during the day; coyotes barking in the distance (but no need at all to worry about them!), birds, and ticks. So do wear insect repellant and try to avoid walking through tall grass.
