University Lake on IU Campus.
The lake was originally intended as a means of backup water distribution to the IU campus in 1911. At that time, water shortages forced the City of Bloomington to cancel their water contract with IU, compelling the university to create its own freshwater reservoirs. The dam was built in 1911 and made larger over time as the university wanted to increase its carrying capacity.
The dam and lake exist to this day on 16 acres and primarily serve as drainage for the IU Golf Course and surrounding forest as well as an educational center for students. The site of the former pump station still exists as a foundation, though few ruins from former structures remain.

Macro Group Outing University Lake (Update 09/23/2017)
Next Saturday we have a scheduled Macro event for those who are not on the club field trip to Madison/Clifty Falls. We will be going to University Lake on IU's campus to look for mushrooms and other Fall photo ops. We plan to meet at the IU Foundation at 9:30 a.m. Hiking around the lake should take an hour or so, depending on how many stops we have for getting photos--although it's not necessary to hike all the way around if you prefer not to. Here are the directions for parking:
Meet at the southern end of the IU Foundation parking lot and carpool to the research building on the University Lake site--we've been asked to do that by the University. The entrance to the IU Foundation is off the 45/46 Bypass. If you're heading north/west on the Bypass, it's a right turn after the 17th St. traffic light and immediately before the square white 45/46 road signs. If you're heading south/east on the Bypass, it's the first left after the Fee Lane traffic light and after you pass the Foundation building. Drive straight in, not turning right or left, and park at the back of the lot.
I'm sad to report that an enthusiastic macro member passed away this week...Sue Haverstock. Her memorial services will also be on Sat. Sept. 30, at Day & Deremiah Frye Funeral Home at 4150 E. 3rd at 1:00. Friends may visit between 11:00 and 1:00. Since our outing had not planned lunch or an afternoon event, we can still be available to go to the service.
