Photo Critique Meeting

  • Bloomington, IN, 47408 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Our Photo Critique Focus Group will be a Zoom (not hybrid) meeting.

In November we will be diving into the world of paintings and drawing inspiration from them. We will be looking at a few key things: How effectively you've captured the essence of the painting. Lighting, exposure, and post-processing. Creativity and experimentation with different angles and perspectives. For the photo share we will ask for a brief explanation to help us understand your thought process. This is a great way to learn from each other and grow as photographers. Don't worry if you don't wish to or can't use November's theme! We still encourage you to join us at the session and bring your photographs for feedback. We are excited to see and critique your work! Images (limit of 5) should be sent, using Dropbox, to Jaime Gonzalez (higonzilla@gmail.com) by midafternoon on the day of the meeting.

I've included a link to a list of 50 great photographers.  You may have your own list.  I would personally add Fan Ho for his use of light in both color and black and white.  Do you have a favorite photographer maybe even someone not famous?  Maybe someone who just catches a photo that speaks to you?

Why are they great? Do you critique their photos or just love them?

Photoshare will be up to 3 photos per person following our discussion.

Here is the drop box link to upload your photos.   Please include your name in the file name when uploading. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/6u72w6dsjnbxhvq/AABdWR2N1w72jDxYRc8E0qcva?dl=0

Folks, I have to cancel tonight's meeting for a personal reason.  We'll meet up next month for sure.

Until then please take a look at this video on YouTube.  Think about the photos you see from these great photographers.  How they move us, the message and the forethought as they were captured.

We'll discuss this video next month.

Photo Critique Meeting

We're excited to see many of you for the first meeting of the Critique Focus Group.  This will be a hybrid meeting, with a Zoom option available for those that can't meet in person.

The goals of this group are to provide honest peer review in a supportive environment, as well as to sharpen photography skills through discussion and feedback.  The focus group will view submitted images one by one and have a productive conversation about what works in each image, what doesn't, and what could be improved in the future.  Language should be constructive and supportive-- no bullying or belittling will be tolerated.

It is optional to submit images for critique, although it is encouraged.  Jaime and I ask that everyone who wants to submit images (up to 3) please do so before Monday, Jan 30th.  Images can be submitted directly to me (lisajospencer@gmail.com) or Jaime (higonzilla@gmail.com) or both.

And finally, a homework assignment!

Please find the time to watch this YouTube video by landscape photographer Nigel Danson.  The tone and language of this critique are similar to what we're looking to achieve in our own focus group-- insightful ideas, notes on composition and impact, and a generally positive, honest delivery.

Nigel Danson: YouTube

Looking forward to seeing all of you next week!
