BPC Perseid Meteor Shower Field Trip
BPC Perseid Meteor Shower Field Trip
Join us for a field trip to view and photograph the Perseid meteor shower on Sunday night, August 11, at Yellowwood State Forest from dusk until as late as anyone would like to stay, weather permitting. Sunset is around 8:45pm. We will update as the weather outlook becomes more certain.
This is usually the best meteor shower of the year, with up to 100 meteors per hour visible over the whole night sky. Note that the peak of the shower is toward early Monday morning. You may also catch a view of the Milky Way from this fairly dark site away from the lights of Bloomington.
We will gather at the north end of Yellowwood Lake. There is a restroom and ample parking for the picnic area and the adjacent group camping area.
Parking location in Google Maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/s1a5xEynPsX9DStBA
The most direct route is east on SR46 to Yellowwood Rd., about a half hour drive from Bloomington. Bring camera equipment, a chair, bug spray, water, and a flashlight/headlamp, preferably red to preserve night vision.
Some hints on photographing a meteor shower are at: https://www.zoltlevay.com/photographing-meteor-showers.pdf

Meteor Show Photography Opportunity
Meteor Shower Photography Opportunity
The Perseids are among the most reliable annual meteor showers, and this year is expected to be better than usual because the Moon’s phase will be close to new so will not brighten the sky during peak meteor activity. This year the peak activity is during the night of Wednesday, August 11-12. However there is activity over a few days so meteors may be visible a few nights before and after. In general the best viewing is in the early morning hours after midnight, before dawn. Of course all this depends on having clear skies.
We are planning an all-night BPC outing to view and photograph the meteor shower during the night of August 11-12 at Yellowwood Lake, a dark location not far from Bloomington with good viewing in the direction of the meteors. We plan to meet at the group camping area at the north end of the lake near the boat ramp. There is adequate parking, picnic tables, a fire ring and space to set up photo equipment and tents. BPC members can come and stay as long as they like, even all night, to view and photograph the meteors and do any other night sky photography. Some of us plan to set up to photograph all night and more experienced night shooters will be available to answer questions.
Note that this area is not reservable, so may be pre-empted by another group. But it’s unlikely as this is mid-week, and we can get there early and start setting up. Given the uncertainties of weather, etc., this may be postponed until the following night, Thurs., Aug. 12-13.
Please contact Zolt Levay ( zgl@me.com) or Jack Speaker ( jjspeaker@hotmail.com) for more information.

For information, see https://www.garfieldgardensconservatory.org/visit
Caravanning will be available from Bloomington, meeting at 11:45 a.m. in the parking lot of the Kroger store on Vernal Pike, near the entrance to the parking lot. Directions: Take I-69 North to I-465, then I-465 East to I-65 North. Get off at Exit 109, East Raymond St. Turn left onto East Raymond St. and stay in the left lane in order to turn almost immediately left at the next intersection onto Shelby St. Go 0.3 miles and turn right into Garfield Park. The Conservatory will be on the left as you enter. If you pass the public library on Shelby St. you have gone too far.

Point n Shoot and Portrait Focus Groups Field Trip to Indiana Limestone Symposium
On June 13th I will lead a small group of photographers on a mini field trip. For the last several years I have taken photographs of the Indiana Limestone Symposium and this year one of the Symposium’s organizers, Amy Brier, has contacted me with an invitation to attend their Open House on Thursday, June 13th 1:00-4:00 pm.
This is an annual event that brings in stone carvers from across the USA and even from other countries to make stone carvings from southern Indiana limestone which has become legendary around the world. There is no money involved for photographers but the organizers are seeking images to use on their Facebook page and for their promotional purposes of the event. This is an opportunity to photograph interesting men and women who are true crafts persons and artists in stone carving.
Please consider joining me Thursday, June 13th from 1:00-4:00 at the Bybee Stone Quarry in Ellettsville, Indiana where the Limestone Symposium is held each year. I am inviting members of the Point and Shoot Focus Group and the Portrait Focus Group to consider showing up and providing the symposium with a few of your favorite photographs. Although I’m inviting both of my Focus Groups anyone in the BPC would be welcome to attend.
If you are interested you can either meet me at 1:00 at the Bybee Stone Quarry or if persons wanting to attend wish to car pool, you may show up at 12:30 pm at Kip May Photography studio, 141 N. Adams Street, and we can car pool and caravan.
Please RSVP kipmay@sbcglobal.net or 812-345-0142 so I can plan accordingly if you wish to attend.
Thank you.

Informal field trip/LAWN outing Columbus, Indiana
This excursion is not intended to be an official LAWN group field trip, but rather an unstructured opportunity for interested photographers (and friends) to see and photograph some of Columbus' collection of modern architecture and to enjoy visiting a nearby town with an unusual appreciation for good design. According to the Columbus Visitor Center (www.columbus.in.us), “The American Institute of Architects ranked Columbus sixth in the nation for innovation and design, right up there with San Francisco and Boston.” Neill Vaughn will be at the K-Mart parking lot by Bloomingfoods East, at from 6:30 to 6:45 a.m. for those who want to set out early. Columbus is an easy 45-minute drive east of Bloomington on Hwy 46. When you get to Columbus, continue straight ahead a couple of miles to the downtown and follow the signs to the Visitor Center. That's where we will park, and we'll start photographing close by. The Visitor Center offers two-hour bus tours at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., and there may be a 90-minute guided walking tour at 10:30 a.m. If you don't see Neill and others when you arrive, you can call him at 812-345-8937.
